DW: New German Chancellor Olaf Solz

After 16 years of Angela Merkel’s rule in the country, Germany today acquired a new chancellor. With 395 votes in favor, 303 against, 6 abstentions and 3 invalid, the German parliament elected 63-year-old Olaf Soltz to the post.

It is estimated that around 15 lawmakers in the new ruling coalition – Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals – have not voted for him. However, similar losses were recorded in the elections for the election of chancellor in the past.

The 63-year-old Solz is the ninth chancellor of post-war Germany and, after Willie Bradt, Helmut Schmidt and Gerhard Schroeder, the fourth Social Democrat to hold the post.

New cabinet and ceremony at the chancellery

After his election, the parliament adjourned and Mr. Soltz went to the presidential palace where President Frank-Walter Steinmeier handed him the appointment document. Olaf Solz then returned to parliament to be sworn in as chancellor. Then, together with the new members of the Council of Ministers, he visited again the President of the Republic, who also handed over the appointment documents to them.

At 13.30 German time follows the swearing in of the new ministers in parliament and at 18.00 the new cabinet will meet to form a body. Earlier, at 15.00, the handover ceremony from Angela Merkel to Olaf Solz will take place at the Chancellery.

However, according to a poll by the Forsa Institute, 57% of respondents believe that Olaf Soltz will hold the post of Chancellor as well as Angela Merkel, while 27% believe the opposite.
