DW: The coronavirus situation in Germany is serious

Large increase in Covid-19 cases. Health Minister Jens Span calls for a negative test from both vaccinated and recovering patients. Cancel events.

Germany’s positivity index has risen even more. The number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days is 263.7. A week ago it was at 169.9. Health services recorded 48,640 new cases in one day. “The situation is serious and I urge everyone to take it seriously,” Health Minister Jens Spann told a news conference in Berlin today. Referring to the geometric increase in coronavirus cases in Germany, he argued for the need for stricter regulations regarding access to events. The certificate of vaccination or recovery, or the negative test to participate in an event is no longer enough. In the future, only those who have a vaccination or recovery certificate and will also be tested negative for coronavirus should be allowed to enter. Jens Spann announced that from tomorrow the Covid-19 tests will be free again. In addition, the doctor’s fee for each dose of vaccine will increase from 20 to 28 euros.

Big restrictions for the unvaccinated

In the same press conference, Lothar Wheeler, president of the Robert Koch State Epidemiological Institute, called on everyone to limit their contacts. It should be expected that in the next period the number of new infections will increase greatly. Already in some parts of Germany the number of cases per 100,000 inhabitants in one week has exceeded 1,000. Mr. Wheeler recommended the cancellation of major events but also the closure of restaurants and bars in areas with a very high number of cases. Earlier, Health Minister Spann, in discussing the possibility of imposing a lockdown, indicated that the current legislation allows areas with a very high number of cases to implement this measure. A bill submitted to the Social Democrats, Greens and Liberals, the three parties that intend to form the next government, no longer provides for a lockdown, closure of schools and a ban on traffic. The restrictions will mainly apply to the unvaccinated.
