E Ink Holdings, which makes electrophoretic displays, which it also calls “digital paper,” and industrial PC company Avalue, have announced a partnership. The first fruit of the collaboration was a next-generation product, descriptively titled Digital Paper Tablet Solution, for businesses. The tablet is based on the development of the Linfiny joint venture between E Ink and Sony Semiconductor Solutions. As stated, the tablet is designed for use in schools, government agencies and corporations. It will be offered as a standard product that can be adapted and branded for a specific customer. Two types of device are presented. One has a 10.3-inch display with a resolution of 1404 x 1872 pixels, which corresponds to a density of 226 pixels per inch, and the second has a 13.3-inch display with a resolution of 1650 x 2200 pixels, which corresponds to a density of 207 pixels per inch. In both cases, the E Ink Carta 1250 display is capable of displaying 16 levels of gray and provides a higher contrast ratio, faster page turning and improved pen speed compared to previous models.

The 10.3-inch tablet weighs only 261g and is 5.85mm thick. The 13.3-inch tablet weighs 368g and is only 5.7mm thick. Both tablets come with a batteryless digital pen that uses Wacom EMR technology. According to the manufacturer, the screen’s non-slip, non-glass surface provides the same writing experience as paper. There are no glare on the screen, and the image on it is perfectly visible even under direct sunlight. The tablet has 32 GB of internal memory. Encryption is used to protect user data. As for autonomy, the operating time without recharging in the “light” usage scenario is three weeks, in the “heavy” scenario – five days. The tablet equipment includes USB 2.0 Type-C, Wi-Fi IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac and Bluetooth 5.0.
The solution includes Digital Paper Control Server (DCSS) software, a set of APIs that securely transfer documents to and from digital paper tablets. The tablet can be integrated with existing services by optimizing the Android app for use with the ePaper display. Software development kits, toolkits and documentation are available through Avalue.
