Early menopause is related to greater risk of muscle loss, study says

Muscle pain is one of the common symptoms of menopause , which explains why women over 50 experience more pain than men in this same age group. Furthermore, muscle function and mass can also be affected by the climacteric. Now, a new study shows that early menopause, especially induced by surgery (such as ovary removal) can further increase the risk of muscle disorders.

O study was published on May 1st, in the scientific journal Menopausefrom the Menopause Society. The researchers decided to evaluate the effect of different types of menopause on discomfort and muscle function in postmenopausal women. The work included almost 650 women in total.

Researchers found that women who experienced premature surgical menopause were more likely to develop musculoskeletal discomfort and sarcopenia (loss of muscle mass) than those who went through natural menopause at age 45 or older.

Early menopause is one that occurs before the age of 40. This condition can occur due to different factors, such as breast cancer, ovarian cancer, endometrial cancer and other cancers that lead to ovarian failure, according to Maria dos Anjos Neves Sampaio Chaves, gynecologist at Delboni, a brand belonging to Dasa, in the article previously published in CNN .

Surgical early menopause is one that occurs as a result of the removal of the ovaries by surgery. The procedure prevents menstruation from occurring and, consequently, leads to menopause.

According to researchers, pain and reduced muscle mass in postmenopausal women may be more related to hormone deficiency than age.

“This study highlights the potential long-term musculoskeletal effects of premature surgical menopause, which causes a more abrupt and complete loss of ovarian hormones, including estrogen and testosterone, than natural menopause. Using hormone therapy until the natural age of menopause has the potential to mitigate some of the long-term adverse effects of early estrogen loss,” says Stephanie Faubion, medical director at Menopause Society.
