Early parliamentary elections in Portugal on May 18

The Portuguese president announced tonight the dismantling of the House and the announcement of early parliamentary elections on May 18, following the collapse of the Conservative Government of Luis Modenegro, who was accused by the opposition of conflict. President Marcelo Rembelo de Souza stressed that he wishes to secure the country’s stability, stating that May 18th is “the date that most parties prefer” to hold the elections. For several weeks, outgoing Prime Minister Luis Modenegro had been targeted by the opposition, which criticized him for conflict of interests due to a family business. The opposition complained that Spinumvira, founded by Montenegro in 2021, benefited from taking over as head of the Portuguese government and closed contracts with various private companies.
