Petrinja, a city of 20,000 inhabitants 44 kilometers from Zagreb, is practically destroyed. A very strong earthquake struck Croatia in the late morning of 29 December. The epicenter is about one hundred kilometers from Zagreb with a magnitude of 6.4 on the Richter scale and a depth of about 10 kilometers.
The quake, witnesses say, lasted more than 20 seconds and clearly was felt throughout the North East of Italy, from Veneto to Friuli Venezia Giulia, up to Lombardy and the Marche.
Reports have come from Venice, Bologna and Milan.

In Croatia there is enormous damage: collapsed roofs and entire buildings destroyed. The center of Petrinja it’s destroyed. The mayor, Darinko Dumbovic, confirmed the death of a 12-year-old girl: «My city is completely destroyed. It cannot be described, it is like in Hiroshima. We need help. ‘

In Sisak the earthquake would have completely destroyed a church with people inside. There are many injured. TO Zagreb there is no electricity and telephone lines are interrupted. Local authorities have urged people to stay outdoors and not to use cars.

The Krsko nuclear power plant in Slovenia was closed as a precaution.
In the afternoon an earthquake was felt in the province of Verona. The magnitude, according to a first estimate, is higher than 4, between 4.3 and 4.8. It was also distinctly felt in a large area of ​​Northern Italy.
