Earthquake in Haiti, everything is missing: food, water and medical care

After a violent 7.2 magnitude earthquake on Saturday destroyed infrastructure and hospitals and killed at least 1,300 people, Haitian citizens are facing a serious lack of food, water and medical care. Hospitals are collapsing and many roads are blocked: rescue operations and the supply of basic necessities are made even more difficult. A very high but still indefinite number of people have so far been missing, and it is feared that they may have remained trapped under collapsed buildings.

This is the umpteenth blow to a country still shaken by the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse, on July 7, and never really recovered from the disastrous earthquake of 11 years ago, which killed about 300 thousand people (but the exact number was never exactly determined) and razed much of the capital Port-au-Prince to the ground.

This earthquake is even more destructive than that of 2010, but has hit an area with less population density. In particular two cities, Les Cayes and Jeremie, in the southern part of Haiti, 160 kilometers from Port au Prince, they reported the most serious devastation: just over a thousand deaths have so far been ascertained in the southern administrative department alone. Thousands of houses and a multi-storey hotel have collapsed and some roads and bridges have become impassable, making rescues even more complex. The epicenter of the earthquake is 8 kilometers from Petit Trou de Nippes, where the telephone lines were interrupted.

The situation could worsen further in the next few hours, due to the arrival (between today and tomorrow) of the tropical storm Grace, which in a matter of days could potentially expose Haiti to additional devastation. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC) in Miami, Grace, with a movement that is difficult to predict, the storm has reached the Leeward Islands and is advancing towards Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti. The country’s prime minister, Ariel Henry, said so state of emergency: the measure will remain in effect for one month.
