Strong seismic vibration of magnitude 6.3 Richter, occurred in the early hours of Tuesday (11/1), at 3:07 at Paphos, in Cyprus.
According to the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens, the focal depth was 19.5 km and its epicenter off Paphos and specifically at a distance of 50 km from the coast of Cyprus.
Earthquake in Paphos: What Gerasimos Chouliaras says
The Director of Research of the Geodynamic Institute of Athens, seismologist, Gerasimos Chouliaras by posting his Facebook states:
“THE Cyprus is located in the seismogenic zone of the Alps-Himalayas, in which 15% of earthquakes occur worldwide. The seismicity of Cyprus is mainly attributed to the “Cyprus Arc”, which is the tectonic boundary between the African and Eurasian lithosphere in the Eastern Mediterranean region. The African plate moves north towards the Eurasian plate resulting in the collision of the two plates and the sinking of the African plate under the Anatolian plate (part of the Eurasian plate where Cyprus is located).
The western part of the Cyprus Arc presents intense seismic activity with earthquakes of intermediate depth (up to 130km) near the Gulf of Antalya, where the subsidence is active. The central part also shows strong seismicity, mainly with surface earthquakes. The eastern part shows low seismicity in the absence of earthquakes of intermediate depth, possibly due to inactive subsidence. The most intense seismicity of Cyprus is observed in the central-western part of the Cyprus Arc and in land faults in Paphos, Limassol and Larnaca.
Historical reports and archeological findings testify that Cyprus was hit by strong earthquakes in the past, which in several cases destroyed its cities. Historical data show that 20 catastrophic earthquakes, with magnitude greater than V on the modified Mercalli scale, occurred between 26 BC. and 1900 AD
More accurate data on earthquakes in Cyprus began to be collected in 1896, when seismological stations began operating in neighboring countries. The situation has improved significantly since the mid-1980s, with the establishment of seismic stations in Cyprus. During the last century, hundreds of earthquakes centered in Cyprus and the surrounding area were felt on the island. “Dozens of them were damaged and some were injured.”
