Earthquake in Turkey: Alex, the large dog pulled alive from the rubble after 23 days – Watch video

Alex, a large, shaggy dog ​​with light colored eyes, was pulled alive from the rubble of a building in Antakia (Antioch) 23 days after earthquake that destroyed this major city in southern Turkey, local media reported today. Alex was trapped in cement slabs that had formed something like a pit when they collapsed from the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck on February 6 shortly after 04:00 a.m., according to images of his rescue, broadcast by the Turkish DHA news agency.

His owner, Murat Ariji, who heard him barking, alerted a rescue team sent by the municipality of Iconium, in the central Turkey.

“Alex, come on my dog,” the rescuers can be heard saying in the video.

“Well done… well done kid,” they also tell him before they manage to grab the large, shaggy dog, who despite his discomfort appears to be fine.

Alex, who is not purebred, has been taken into the care of an animal protection association (Haytap) who will examine him before handing him over to his owner.

Rescue crews rescued hundreds of cats, dogsbirds, rabbits and even cows and sheep, which were trapped in the rubble of buildings in southern Turkey.

The last survivors of the earthquake, a couple, were found in Antioch on February 18.

Investigations have since been officially suspended in 9 of the 11 provinces affected by the quake, with the exception of Hatay and Kahramanmaras, where it was epicentered, according to AFP and Agence France-Presse.

This earthquake, which is considered to have caused the worst disaster that modern Turkey has experienced, claimed the lives of over 45,000 people and more than 5,000 in neighboring Syriaand destroyed hundreds of thousands of buildings.
