Earthquake in Turkey: The Greek scientific mission detected the large surface fault

The Greek scientific mission to Turkeyconsisting of them Efthymi LekkaPanagiotis Karydis, Manolis Vassilakis, Spyros Mavroulis and Yiannis Argyropoulos identified the large seismic fault that appears on the surface near the town of Nurdağı.

The fault occurs for hundreds of meters at the surface and intersects alluvial formations within the pull-apart basin, in which a flat plateau develops.

The seismic fault runs through the western limits of the city of Nurdağı and has caused significant damage to agricultural product silo facilities and damage to the road network and infrastructure.

The type of fault, which is horizontal slip and shows movement of the order of 5 meters in the area, creates peculiar damage to the buildings, corresponding to those observed in the 1999 İzmit earthquake.
