Earthquakes in Turkey – Celentis: In the next few hours we will have a strong aftershock, over 6.5 Richter

His intense concern about the situation in Turkey and the Syria after the deadly earthquakes expressed during his television interview on Wednesday (8/2) the director of the Geodynamic InstituteAkis Tselentis.

While the latest figures put the death toll at nearly 8,000 in the two countries and tens of thousands of people are injured, Akis Tselentis predicts that a strong aftershock will occur immediately.

Certainly in the next few hours we will have a strong aftershock, over 6.5 Richter“, said the director of the Geodynamic Institute, speaking to Mega.

“The earthquake happened in east Anatolia fault which has nothing to do with northern Anatolia reaching the northern Aegean. We have no problem”, he emphasized, referring to whether the big earthquake in the neighbor can affect Greece, however as he stated “it can affect Cyprus but we are not too worried. It will take place in the sea and the structural fabric of the island is flawless.”

According to Mr. Tselentis, the huge disaster in Turkey is due to the lawless building and the sloppiness of the constructions.

“Whole neighborhoods were built overnight, on illegal public land, with porous concrete so the buildings fall like cards. Even the new buildings are shabby. Erdogan’s policy was to build workers’ housing to house his voters and we saw the results,” he underlined.

Over 20,000 dead

The sloppiness of the constructions and the lack of rescue crews, along with the bad weather, will push the victims away, estimated Mr. Tselentis.

“The dead will exceed 20,000. After 4 days, things are very bad for those trapped,” he said and emphasized that the situation is similar in Syria, which counts thousands of victims from the deadly earthquake.

“The situation is tragic”.

As the director of the Geodynamic Institute stated, the aftershock sequence “will last months, maybe even years” with strong aftershocks, while any recession in the magnitude of the aftershocks means that there will be an upswing later.

“I would be concerned about a shift of the northern Anatolia fault. For the time being I am not worried”, noted the professor.

“An area near Istanbul on the North Anatolian Fault has time to produce an earthquake and time to produce energy. If something happens there, we will see similar images because Istanbul also has an anarchic structure” he underlined.
