A man was stabbed on Wednesday night (8/30), at a tram stop on the border between East and West Jerusalem and the attacker was “neutralized”, the Israeli police announced.
“A knife-wielding suspect carried out a terrorist attack near Jerusalem’s Shivtel Israel tram station” the police said. “The suspect was neutralized at the scene”the statement added.
A border police officer traveling on the tram saw the attack as it happened and took action, police said. “He immediately got off the train and fired”hitting the suspect, they said.
Police spokesman Dean Elsdunne told AFP that the attacker was a “minor” from East Jerusalema predominantly Palestinian area.
The 14-year-old attacker was from the Beit Hanina neighborhood in east Jerusalem and added that the doctors pronounced him dead.

The Magen David Adom service (Israel’s equivalent of the Red Cross) reported for its part that first aid was given to a man aged about 25, who he had injured his back and was then taken to hospital. His condition is stable.
Dozens of Israeli security personnel gathered at the station, where many ultra-orthodox Jews dressed in black suits and white shirts also gatheredan AFP correspondent reported.

An AFP photographer saw the attacker’s body lying on the ground under a blanket.
Some security officers used ice to clear the area, where bloodstains were still visible.
Palestinian militant group Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip, said the attacker carried out a “heroic” operation at the tram station.

According to international law, East Jerusalem is occupied territory.
About 230,000 Israelis live in annexed east Jerusalem, along with at least 360,000 Palestinians who want to make the area the capital of their future independent state.
Israeli-Palestinian peace talks have been stalled since 2014.

Since the beginning of the year, in violent incidents linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, they have lost their lives at least 222 Palestinians, 31 Israelis, one Ukrainian and one Italian, according to an AFP tally based on official sources.
