Eating avocado may reduce the risk of diabetes in women, study finds

Consumed by many who opt for a healthy lifestyle, avocado may have a new benefit . A study published this month found that the Fruit may be advantageous for decreasing the risk of diabetes, especially in women.

The research, titled published in the journal Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, investigated the relationship between avocado consumption and diabetes in adults also analyzing data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey of Mexico (ENSANUT) in three different years: 2012, 2016 and 2018.

For the study, approximately 28 thousand people diagnosed with the disease by a doctor around the age of 20 years . Approximately 59% of them were women.

These were grouped into two groups: consumers or non-consumers of the food.

Of the participants in the three surveys, around 45% were avocado consumers, with an average daily consumption of 34.7 grams for men and 29.8 grams for women.

The study found that, compared to people who do not consume avocados, women had a significantly reduced risk of having diabetes, regardless of factors such as age, education level, body weight, physical activity, among others.

The decrease, however, was not observed in male participants.

According to the research authors, the study suggests the potential role of avocado as a beneficial component of dietary interventions aimed at reducing the risk of diabetes.

Finally, the study also highlights the need for more research into personalized nutrition in the prevention and control of diabetes, in addition to dietary recommendations based on each person's characteristics.
