E-commerce giant eBay has filed two trademark applications for a wide range of services related to non-fungible tokens and the metaverse.
This was announced by the lawyer of the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) Michael Kondoudis (Michael Kondoudis). According to the applications, the company plans to work with platforms for trading downloadable virtual goods, as well as for creating and trading non-fungible tokens (NFTs).
The description of the applications also indicates software for managing and confirming transactions with collectible tokens, as well as computer programs for using, creating, trading, storing and transferring NFTs using blockchain and smart contracts.
The patent filings were filed shortly before eBay announced it had acquired KnownOrigin, a non-fungible token trading platform. eBay CEO Jamie Iannone noted that the e-commerce platform began to actively work with NFTs in May last year, as more and more people are interested in this industry.
“eBay intends to be a platform where people from all over the world can find a rare or unique addition to their collection. So we started adding digital collectibles more frequently,” Iannone said.
Many well-known companies show interest in the metaverse and NFT. This spring, payment systems American Express and Mastercard also registered several trademarks related to these areas. Additionally, this month Mastercard announced a partnership with NFT platforms to enable customers to purchase collectible tokens directly.
