The death toll from the outbreak has risen to 48 Ebola in Uganda while the confirmed infections amount to 131, as the country’s health official dealing with the management of the outbreak said on Thursday.
Last week, Uganda’s health minister pointed out that the death toll stood at 30, with 109 confirmed cases.
“The confirmed cases to date are 131 and the deaths 48” said Henry Kyobbe Bossa, who is in charge of Ebola cases at Uganda’s Ministry of Health, at a press briefing organized by the World Health Organization’s Africa office.
“On the spread and on when we are likely to have the end of the outbreak, I don’t see experts on this panel who can actually predict when it will end,” he said, as reported by the Athens News Agency. “Authorities are using measures such as contact tracing, risk education and appropriate treatments as well as burial methods to bring the outbreak under control,” he added.
Last month, the government expressed optimism that the Ebola outbreak would be eradicated by the end of the year.
Africa’s top public health body said last week it believed the situation was “not getting out of hand”.
The strain of the virus circulating in Uganda is that of Sudan, for which there is no tested vaccine, unlike the so-called Zaire strain, which is more common and has been recorded during recent outbreaks in neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo.
