The ECDC issued a statement on acute cases hepatitis observed in children and noted that overall 166 cases have been reported in Europe.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control reports that following the initial report of an increase in cases of severe acute hepatitis of unknown etiology in previously healthy children from the United Kingdom in April 5, 2022 and until April 20, 2022were located 111 cases, aged 10 and under in the country. From Wednesday 27 April 2022 have been reported about 55 cases from many countries Europe (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Romania, Spain). Sporadic cases have been reported from other countries around the world (Canada, Israel, Japan, USA).
So far, the exact cause of hepatitis in these children remains unknownwhile the laboratory control has ruled out the viral hepatitis types A, B, C, D and E. in all cases.
Priority at this point of the event is identification of the underlying causative agentthe pathogenesis of the disease and the risk factors for the severity of cases of acute severe hepatitis in children.
The current premise is that one human adenovirus infection or co-infection is the most likely causative factor. However, other reasons are still under consideration and have not yet been ruled out.
