The lucky ones are Canada, Greenland and Russia. From these lands it will be possible to see the annular solar eclipse of Thursday 10 June at its best. It will be seen from most of Europe and only partially from Northern Italy. However, there is the possibility to see it online through the Virtual Telescope which will broadcast it live from Canada starting at 11:30 am.
WHERE AND WHEN
The eclipse begins at 10 and 12 Italian time and ends at 13 and 33. A small part of Canada and Greenland will see the total annular eclipse.
For the others it will be partial: Western and Eastern Europe, Russia, Siberia and Central Asia.
In Valle d’Aosta it will be seen at 5%. In Milan, the eclipse will begin at 11.35 am on 10 June, will reach its maximum at 12.6 pm with the 3.5% darkening of the solar disk. The deadline will be at 13.03. Nothing will be seen under Florence.
WHAT IS IT
The solar eclipse is the celestial phenomenon by which the Sun is covered, obscured by the Moon. It can be partial or total, that is, the solar disk can only be partially or entirely covered. It happens when the Earth, Moon and Sun are aligned. It is the Moon that projects part of its shadow on the part of the earth’s surface which therefore does not see the Sun. Looking at it it seems that the Sun is slowly being eaten by the darkness brought by the Moon.
In the central phase, only the so-called solar corona, the outline of the Moon, remains illuminated. The phenomenon occurs only if the Moon is at such a distance from the Earth that it appears to have a slightly larger angular diameter than the Sun. If, on the other hand, the Moon is a little smaller, a luminous ring remained and the eclipse is called annular. During an annular eclipse it is as if the Sun remained a luminous ring during the central phase. The Moon is too far from the Earth’s surface to completely obscure the Sun’s disk.
PRECAUTIONS
The Sun can be dangerous for the eye, especially in younger people, in which the lens is more transparent. Always use certified filters for direct observation of the Sun (UV and IR). The same goes for photographs.
AND THEN?
There will be a total solar eclipse on December 4, visible only at the South Pole. For Italy, the next partial solar eclipse will be on October 25, 2022. For a total we need to look much further ahead. On 3 September 2081 the shadow cone will cross France, Austria part of Trentino-Alto Adige and Friuli-Venezia Giulia and the entire Balkan Peninsula.
