Eco-friendly and ethical: Volvo to ditch leather in its EVs

The Swedish carmaker Volvo, following the example of other representatives of the industry, set a course for the electrification of its model range. Moreover, Volvo wants to make its future cars not only environmentally friendly, replacing the internal combustion engine with an electric motor, but also ethical, abandoning the use of natural leather in favor of more environmentally friendly and recycled materials.

Volvo officials have announced that the company will no longer use natural leather in the interior of its electric vehicles starting in 2025. This applies to all electric Volvo models without exception. The Swedish brand is committed to ensuring that at least 25% of all materials used in new cars are recyclable, in addition to the previously announced goal of moving to 100% by 2025 at all stages of energy production from renewable sources.

“Being a progressive car manufacturer means taking care of all aspects of environmental sustainability, not just carbon emissions. Responsible supplier selection is an important part of this work. And ditching leather in our electric vehicles is a good step in that direction. Finding materials that do not harm animal welfare will be difficult, but this is not a reason to avoid addressing this important issue. Volvo takes a strong ethical stance, doing everything it can to prevent harm to animals by helping to reduce the demand for animal materials, ”said Stuart Templar, director of sustainability at Volvo Cars.

As an alternative to the leather interior, Volvo buyers will be offered other finishes using recycled materials, including the innovative Nordico material made from plastic bottles and wine corks.
