Economist: Can Turkey occupy a small Greek island?

Turkey accuses Greece of militarizing the islands, contrary to international treaties. Greece does not deny sending in new troops, arguing that it is doing so only for defense purposes. With elections scheduled in both Greece and Turkey this year, more tension is expected between the two countries, the report states.

According to the Economist report, Turkey disputes Greece’s sovereignty over Kastelorizo and some other islands. The island has recently been at the center of the Greek-Turkish dispute. Greece, which owns the island, maintains that Kastelorizo has a continental shelf area, or EEZ, under the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

It is recalled that earlier the Turkish president had warned that “we may come suddenly one night”, suggesting an invasion. It should be noted that the coasts of Turkey are close to Kastellorizo, while the nearest Greek island, Rhodes, is 120 km away.

The article emphasizes that in no way does Kastelorizo look like a place that could become a “flashpoint”. Daily life on the island continues at a normal pace, however a warship HS Daniolos is constantly patrolling the waters around the island for security reasons.

On the contrary, Turkey argues that Kastelorizo is too small and far from the Greek mainland to be entitled to an EEZ, while Ankara complains that Greek claims block Turkey’s exit to the Mediterranean.

According to the Economist report, a number of conditions argue against the risk of armed conflict between Turkey and Greece. One is the fact that both states are members of NATO. The other is that war would crush every country’s tourism sector. But the danger is there, also because Mr. Erdogan’s government often uses violence to pursue its interests, especially in Syria.
