Economist: Erdogan is a bully – Against the background of elections, he can lead Turkey to dictatorship

The time in Turkey starts counting down for the elections which are to be held in May and Economist in his new article he states that the Recep Tayyip Erdogan under the pretext of resorting to the polls, it can lead the neighboring country to dictatorship.

The economist.com in an op-ed showing the Turkish crescent shaped like Erdogan and titled “Turkey’s Incubating Dictatorship,” it says that “Mr. Erdogan’s behavior in the run-up to the election could push what is now a deeply flawed democracy over the edge.” , in a complete dictatorship”.

He also notes that “Turkey has the second largest armed forces in NATO and plays a critical role in a turbulent neighborhood, especially in war-torn Syria. It has growing influence in the western Balkans, the eastern Mediterranean and recently in Africa. Above all, its role in the Black Sea and in Russia’s war in Ukraine is important. Last year he helped broker a deal to allow more Ukrainian grain to be sent to a hungry world.”

“Therefore, foreigners should pay attention to Turkey’s presidential and parliamentary elections, which Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed to be held on May 14. All the more so that, under its increasingly unstable president, the country is on the brink of disaster,” he then adds.

“Erdogan imposes his cruelty”

The magazine, among other things, calls on Western leaders to take action against Erdogan with the aim of containing him, since he can take unpredictable decisions that will embarrass Western nations.

“An embittered, isolated Turkish president could engage in more bitter territorial disputes with Greece, Cyprus and Syria. It could allow the 5 million migrants and refugees in Turkey to set sail for southern Europe. It could block the accession of Sweden and Finland to NATO”, says the publication, calling on the West not to “alienate” Turkey, but to bring it “on the straight – democratic – path”, it says characteristically.

Thus, he noted that “Erdogan is a bully who imposes his cruelty to satisfy his interests inside and outside of Turkey.”
