Economist: What is the best city to live in – What is the location of Athens?

The index was published Global Liveability for 2021 of his list Economist Intelligence Unit, where the best but also the worst cities to live in are presented. The list is compiled every year while 140 cities are evaluated based on 30 different criteria.

These criteria are the standard of living, transport infrastructure, crime, economic stability and access to health and education for all. New Zealand’s Auckland came in first, while the cities of Australia, Japan and New Zealand also saw their rankings rise.

The opposite was the picture in Europe, where many cities fell, something that happened with Athens, which is ranked in the 10 cities with the largest “reduction” in the score. In second place, after Auckland, is located in Osaka, Japan, Adelaide, Australia, Wellington, New Zealand and Tokyo, Japan.

Last year, Vienna was at the top of the list and now it has dropped to number 12. In the top ten are only two cities in Europe, Zurich and Geneva in Switzerland, despite the small restrictions that still apply.

“Dive” of 20 places for Athens

Athens fell by 20 places and is now in 92nd place, compared to 72nd last year, while her fall put her on ten cities with the largest negative change.

This decline is mainly attributed to the healthcare index, which was negatively affected by the pandemic.

Despite the reclassifications at the top of the list, there have been no significant changes to the “bottom” of the list where the Damask Syria is in last place due to the continuation of the civil war.

In The top ten also includes Lagos in Nigeria, Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.
