Economy, war in Ukraine and energy on the current agenda of the Summit

The macroeconomic situation in the Eurozone and the EU, the consequences of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, especially after the reduction of Russian gas supplies to the EU and the issue of energy, are the topics that will be discussed today by European leaders at the Brussels Summit.

“The current situation requires an in-depth discussion,” European Council President Charles Michel said in a letter of invitation to the “27”.

The discussion will take place in the presence of ECB President Christine Lagarde and will address the issue of slowing growth in the EU (2.7% growth for 2022 according to the Commission, inflation (6.1% in 2022, according to the Commission ) and rising energy prices.

On the issue of energy, according to a European source, some countries are “pushing for stronger intervention measures”. Several leaders are expected to stress the need for a European solution to the problem. The Greek Prime Minister and his Italian counterpart Mario Draghi agreed in Rome to raise again the issue of the need to set a ceiling on the wholesale price of gas. It is recalled that the Commission was instructed at the previous Summit to study the appropriateness of setting a ceiling on energy prices. However, the majority of Member States remain cautious about setting energy prices.

European leaders will exchange views on all the above issues, without expecting concrete decisions.
