At least 12 people lost their lives to Ecuador due to consumption adulterated alcoholic beveragesaccording to what the country’s Ministry of Health announced on Friday.
Seven victims, aged 25-56were reported in the province of Santo Domingo de los Chacilas (west). Five victims, aged 42-65were reported in the province of Esmeralda (northwest).
A total of 52 people were poisoned by drinking drinks containing methyl alcohol (or methanol) in these two areas. Among them are 20 participants in a funeral in Santo Domingo.
The authorities they seized more than 50,000 liters of adulterated alcohol in operations they conducted in relation to the reported cases of poisoning.
“Irresponsible people have illegally trafficked alcoholic beverages”Ecuador’s Health Minister Jose Rualez told a radio station, warning citizens to avoid drinking alcohol of dubious origin and asking those showing symptoms of methyl alcohol poisoning to seek medical help immediately.
Methanol poisoning can cause vomiting, convulsions, blindness and in several cases can even lead to death.
