Ecuador: At least 400 police officers were deployed in jail to quell the riots

His national police Equatorial announced on Thursday (30/9) that it had sent 400 police officers to restore order in one of the country’s largest prisons, following an uprising that broke out this week, during which at least 116 detainees were killed and 80 injured.

Rival gangs fought for control of the Penitenciaria del Litoral prison in the state of Wales on Tuesday night, in the deadliest prison clashes in the history of the South American country, after 79 people were killed in February and 22 in July in riots this year.

“Around 400 police officers are operating as part of an operation and investigation mission inside the prison in order to maintain order and guarantee security.“, Earlier today in a tweet, the national police of Ecuadorian Policia Ecuador, while they published a video with police officers walking in full uniform.

Police later added that police discovered three explosive devices inside prison, located on the outskirts of the largest city in Guayaquil.

Yesterday, President Guillermo Lasso announced that he would release resources and develop additional security forces in the country’s penitentiary system, in order to avoid a recurrence of the conflict.
