Ecuador: Draft law to shoot down aircraft that disobey Air Force orders

Its president Equatorial announced that his government will soon submit to parliament draft law to allow the armed forces to shoot down any aircraft that enters the airspace illegally, has not submitted a flight plan and does not obey the orders of the Air Force, in the context of the fight against drug trafficking and organized crime.

“We will soon submit to parliament a bill that would allow aircraft that enter illegally if they do not obey the Air Force’s orders to be shot down,” Guillermo Lasso said during a ceremony for the armed forces.

“The time has come for Ecuador to be free of drug traffickers. They were taking advantage of the lack of radar “, added Mr. Lasso, announcing that in the coming weeks two new radars will be put into operation, which will cover 100% of the airspace.

Between Colombia and Peru, the two countries that produce the largest quantities of cocaine in the world, Ecuador is a platform for drug trafficking due to its porous borders, its dollarized economy and its major export ports. This year alone, authorities have seized 147 tonnes of drugs.

On October 18, Mr. Lasso declared a 60-day state of emergency throughout the country, citing a wave of gang violence involving drug trafficking and prison massacres, in which some 250 detainees have been killed so far this year.
