Ecuador’s justice has imposed a new strict sentence on former Vice President Jorge Glass for a corruption case. Glass, already in prison for similar offenses, was arrested in 2024 in a police operation at the Mexican Embassy, despite being granted political asylum. Vice-President under the presidency of Socialist Rafael Korea (2007-2017) from 2013 to 2017, Mr. Glas, 55 years old, heard a new 13-year prison sentence. He was tried for abuse of funds during the period when he led a committee in charge of being overseen by the execution of rebuilding projects, following a devastating earthquake in 2016 that hit two seaside provinces. The “heavy penalty” was imposed, the Kaisado bidder stressed in the hearing in Quito.
