Ecuador: Presidency elections likely to be tight, says political scientist to CNN

More than 13 million Ecuadorians will go to the polls this Sunday (20) to elect a replacement for conservative President Guillermo Lasso, who called early elections in May.

In an interview with CNN this Saturday (19), political scientist Mauricio Santoro assessed that the election should be very competitive.

The specialist pointed out that the candidate of the former president of Ecuador Rafael Correa (2007-2017), Luisa González, is leading in the polls. The possible opponent of the correista is still unknown.

“Second place is absolutely disputed, depending on the poll. There are three candidates nominated for second place, so everything indicates that tomorrow will be a very tight race for the Ecuadorian Presidency”, he said.

In Ecuador, the second round occurs when no candidate reaches 40% of the votes and 10% more than the runner-up. An eventual presidential runoff is scheduled for October 15.

Violence

This year’s electoral campaign in Ecuador was marked by violence. On August 9, candidate Fernando Villavicencio was shot in the head after a political demonstration.

After the attack, the other candidates tightened security. This Saturday (19), there was a shooting in front of a restaurant where the candidate for the Presidency of Ecuador Otto Sonnenholzner and his family had breakfast.
