The conservative president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, has demanded the resignation of members of his government as he completes his first year in power, marked by a bloody crisis in the country’s prisons, the Quito Communication Secretariat announced on Thursday.
The head of state intends to renew the composition of his group and will in principle replace the ministers of Energy, Agriculture and Human Rights. On Tuesday, he replaced the Minister of Defense.
The president named Javier Vera as energy minister, replacing Juan Carlos Bermeo.
He has not yet announced his options for the other portfolios.
The president of Ecuador completes his first year in power on May 24th out of four of his term.
During his first year in office, his government declared war on drug traffickers, sparking an increase in crime and deadly clashes between gangs, particularly in prisons, where 350 inmates have died since February 2021.
Interior Minister Patricio Carrillo admitted last week that Ecuador is experiencing a crisis over crime. Authorities have counted 1,180 deaths since the beginning of the year.
In 2021, Ecuador seized a record quantity of 210 tons of drugs, mainly cocaine, and so far this year, drug seizures have already reached 75 tons, Mr. Lasso said on Tuesday.
