Ecuador will close borders before the weekend presidential election

The borders of Ecuador will be closed this Saturday (8) until next Monday (10), said President Daniel Noboa in an X post on Monday (3).

Noboa also increased the military presence at the borders and ports.

He said the currency would be closed over the weekend, when he will face 15 opponents in a presidential election on Sunday (9), due to “attempted groups armed to destabilize the country.”

Elections in Ecuador

The general elections of Ecuador, in which the population will choose the next president of the country, will be held on November 9, 2025. It is the first vote within the regular electoral cycle since the election convened in advance by 2023 by the former president Guillermo Lasso, and won by Daniel Noboa.

The surveys show that Noboa, the current president, has the advantage. He is followed by Luisa González, a candidate for a political group related to former leftist president Rafael Correa.

If no candidate gets 50% of the votes or at least 40% with a difference of 10 points over the second, a second round of elections will be held on Sunday, April 13. In it, the two candidates with the most votes in the first round compete with each other.

In this electoral process, the President and the Vice President of the Republic are elected for the period 2025-2029, as well as 151 representatives for the National Assembly, as well as five representatives for the Andean Parliament.

In Ecuador, the vote is mandatory for citizens between 18 and 65 years registered as voters. For over 16 and under 18 and for over 65 years, the vote is optional.
