Ecuador’s Electoral Power condemns murder of presidential candidate

O National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador condemned the assassination of the presidential candidate Fernando Villavicencioin capital Quito, this Wednesday (9). In a publication on social media, the highest electoral body said that the acts of violence that the country is experiencing blemish the development of the election and democracy.

Villavicencio was leaving a political rally held at Anderson College, in Quito, when, already inside his car, he was shot several times.

Villavicencio, from the Coalition Movement party, was one of the main candidates for the presidency of Ecuador. In opinion polls, he fluctuated between second and fifth place.

Evaluations of electoral trends in the country are deficient compared to other South American countries such as Argentina, Uruguay and Brazil, which have institutes with higher accuracy rates.

In June, according to the Centro Estratégico Latinoamericano de Geopolitica (Celag), Villavicencio was in fourth place, with 8% of the voting intentions, behind Luisa González, from the Citizen Revolution party (30%); Otto Sonnenholzner, from the “Vamos Agir” alliance (13%); and Yaku Pérez, from the “Of course it is possible” coalition (11%).

On July 20, Cedatos, a research firm approved by the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Ecuador, found that Villavicencio was in second, with 13.2%, behind only Gonzáles (26.6%) and ahead of Pérez (12.5%) and Sonnenholzner (7.5%).

The presidential election in Ecuador is scheduled to take place in less than 15 days, on Sunday (20), in advance.
