Ecuador’s President Tells His Cabinet He Has Skin Cancer

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso confirmed to members of his cabinet that he was diagnosed with melanoma days after undergoing surgery for an eyelid injury and that he will travel to Houston, United States, for care and treatment, a senior government source said. with knowledge of the health of the head of state told the CNN .

Lasso shared the news with his ministers in a chat. THE CNN had access to these messages exchanged with his office:

“On July 29 this year I was operated on for a lesion in the right eyelid with suspected basal cell carcinoma (healing lesion after removal). However, the pathologist’s detailed answer said it was a melanoma. This type of injury, according to local doctors, requires interdisciplinary management, exploration and treatment strategies that are very well organized in other hospitals of international reference”, wrote the president.

Lasso added that he will travel to Houston on Tuesday, Aug. 16, for “additional examinations.”

“I would like to inform you that, according to the law, the Armed Forces are responsible for the security of the president, both in Ecuador and abroad, and that their corresponding codes include the convenience of traveling on the presidential plane. I have refused that right or provision; the trip is for personal reasons and I will do it by my own means. What I cannot avoid is the company of minimal security personnel”, specified the president in his communication.

Over the weekend and this Monday, the CNN requested more details from the Communications Secretary on President Lasso’s medical situation, but so far we have not received a response.

According to the American Cancer Society, melanoma is a type of skin cancer that starts when melanocytes (the cells that give skin its tan or brown color) start to grow out of control.

The Secretary of Communication of the Presidency had already informed this Saturday that the president would travel to Houston from August 16 to 21 to undergo complementary exams for the eyelid surgery performed in Ecuador.

This is Lasso’s second time traveling to the United States for medical treatment.

In June of last year, he underwent a moderately complex operation on his spine to remove a cyst in his lower back caused by medical malpractice years ago.

After this surgery, the Ecuadorian president stopped using a cane and, according to the government, his mobility improved.
