The actor and comedian Eddie Murphy will receive a lifetime achievement tribute next month at the Golden Globe an annual ceremony that is trying to restore its reception in Hollywood after a diversity and ethics scandal.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the group that votes on the award’s winners, announced Wednesday that Murphy would receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award to celebrate his contributions to entertainment.
Murphy, 61, was part of the cast of the sketch show “Saturday Night Live” and starred in such films as “The Cop”, “The Nutty Professor”, “48 Hours” and “Dreamgirls”.
Past DeMille Award recipients include Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Sophia Loren, Tom Hanks, Jane Fonda and Robert De Niro.
The tribute to Murphy adds a big name to the telecast of the ceremony on Jan. 10.
The Golden Globes were placed under suspicion after a 2021 Los Angeles Times investigation uncovered the practices of the Hollywood Foreign Press and revealed that the organization had no black members.
Broadcaster NBC abandoned the 2022 broadcast after several years, but the CMCSA.O network, owned by Comcast, agreed to broadcast the Globe again in 2023, after the organization announced it had made changes.
