Eddie Redmayne confesses that accepting the role in ‘The Danish Girl’ was a mistake

Eddie Redmayne, the actor who stars in the franchise of Fantastic animals, described his participation in the historical drama The danish girl as a mistake, so much so that he even admitted that if today he was offered the role, he would not accept it at all,

During an interview with the Sunday Times, Redmayne spoke and claimed to agree with the criticism he received for starring in a film that talks about the first transgender woman in history who managed to receive sexual reassignment surgery, he being a heterosexual man.

I made that tape with the best of intentions, but I think it was a mistake. The important discussion here was about the frustrations with the cast because a lot of people didn’t get a chance to do it. There must be a balance, otherwise we will continue to have these discussions.

The danish girl, released in 2015, featured Redmayne as Lili Ilse Elvenes, known as Lili Elbe, a painter and the first transgender woman to receive sex reassignment surgery in 1930. Elbe died in 1931 after her fourth operation. The film was criticized for the stereotypical portrayal of the actor and for not casting a transgender artist for the role.

Although today, the famous Briton accepts his mistake and much of the criticism he received, it is worth mentioning that after the film was screened in theaters, in November 2015, it was Redmayne himself who defended his position, the decision of the producers and their work on the film.

I hope, as any actor would hope, that one can play any type of role as long as it is done with integrity and responsibility.

For his part, during the screening of the film at the Cannes Film Festival of the same year, Tom Hooper, the project’s director, accepted that the film industry has a problem with transgender characters and actors and that, after visiting transgender communities , managed to include up to 50 transgender support actors.

This is not the first time that Redmayne has made clear his position on the support and recognition that transgender communities should receive, since last year, the actor spoke publicly against transphobic statements by JK Rowling, author of Harry Potter and Fantastic animals.

I disagree with Jo’s comments. Transgender women are women, transgender men are men, and non-binary people are also valid.
