Directed by Ari Aster (“Hereditary”, “mysommar”), the feature film “Eddington” premiered this Friday (16) in Cannes Festival. Over the next few days, he receives several sessions. The event lasts until May 24th.
Renowned critics who can already check the work have already published their criticism. Node Rotten Tomatoes website that brings together the specialized opinions, the film premiered with 59% approval.
The production is starring Austin Butler (“Elvis”), Emma Stone (“La la land”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker”), Luke Grimes (“Yellowstone”), Michael Ward (“London gangs”), Pedro Pascal (“The Last of Us”) and more.
Throughout the exhibition, about 20 people left the place and according to Variety, the plot of the director’s new feature did not impress the international audience. However, he received five minutes of applause from those present.
The feature plot revolves around an abandoned couple in a small town of New Mexico. Although initially welcome, the city takes a sinister course at night falls. Joaquin Phoenix plays the sheriff of the city, marked by ambitious dreams.
Among the main criticisms, the film was defined from “tedious” and “annoying” to “funny” and that “I creepy”.
“Aster presented us with another movie that creeps you, makes you nervous and makes you want to get out of your own skin. You just wanted it not to look so close to non -fiction,” he wrote David Fear from Rolling Stone.
“If hereditary and Midsommar impressed with really scary stories and amazing images, and Beau is Afraid was equally disturbing and maddening, Eddington is just annoying and empty,” he said David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter.
“Ari Aster now worryingly creates a sequence of defeats with this disconcertingly tedious movie, a laborious and strangely smug satire that transforms some uninteresting thoughts and without originality into a heavy, flavorless meal,” he criticized Pedro Bradshaw from The Guardian.
“There is an indulgent side in Ari Aster, and although here you are more controlled, you can feel it surrendering to him. But it is also inseparable than makes him in ‘Eddington’, such a stimulating filmmaker,” he praised Owen Gleiberman from Variety.
“Eddington” will compete for the Golden Palma Award, the event’s main event, at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
