Edoardo and Sophie Wessex on an official trip to the Caribbean: another royal flop?

The royal tours to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of the Queen they don’t seem to be good for the British royal family. Not those ai Caribbeanat least. Five days ago the queen’s youngest son landed there, Edoardo, and his wife Sophie Wessex. Finding himself facing the same thorny issues that William And Kate Middleton they faced last March. The Cambridge, from Belize to Jamaica to the Bahamas, were in fact chased by protests linked to colonialism. Not only that: Jamaica has made it clear to the august visitors that it wants to become a republic. Officially organized to celebrate the 70 years on the throne of the sovereign, in reality William and Kate’s trip was born to strengthen relations with the former British colonies. The Dukes had, in particular, a mission: persuade Belize, Jamaica and the Bahamas a do not follow on the path of independence Barbados. Making The Queen lose another Caribbean gem. Mission failed, apparently. And now, to reiterate the Cambridge flop, comes that of the accounts of Wessex.

The Prime Minister of Antigua and BarbudaGaston Browne, receiving Edoardo and Sophie in fact told him bluntly that his Country wishes to «one day become a republic“. Browne specified that the change will not happen overnight, but asked the counts to use their influence to make Britain redress the injustices suffered by its people in the past: “We have been left and deprived of modern institutions such as universities and medical facilities.” The prime minister then pointed out to the royals that no one in his country has welcomed them with controversy and protests: “We decided not to protest because we wanted a frank and open discussion“. But the dukes of Wessex had to postpone the first leg of the trip, the one in Grenada, for reasons still shrouded in mystery. The official note from Buckingham Palace did not clarify anything: “In consultation with the Government of Grenada and on the advice of the Governor General, the visit of the Earl and Countess of Wessex to Grenada has been postponed. The count and the countess hope to visit later ». The most accredited hypothesis is that the Caribbean nation was against the arrival of Prince Edward and Sophie of Wessex because, like many other Commonwealth countries, it wants to say goodbye to the British Crown.

Before arriving in the Caribbean, Edward and Sophie were branded as “oligarchs” by the protesters they want remove the queen from the post of head of state of their islands and they are asking for money and an apology for the “crimes against humanity” of the past. William and Kate had lived through an almost identical script last March. And the speech with which the future king, during an official dinner, had expressed his “Deep pain” About the “repulsiveThe slave trade was not enough to calm the controversy. Many royal observers had called the Cambridge trip a “flop”. That of the accounts of Wessex (lasting seven days) does not seem to have had, at least so far, more successful.
