An Egyptian court has sentenced 10 jihadists to death for “terrorism”, according to a judicial source.
According to Amnesty International, in 2021 Egypt was the third country in the number of executions.
The ten convicts were members of a jihadist group known as the “Helwan Brigades” and were found guilty of “terrorist acts” committed in 2013-15 and for “opening fire on a police vehicle”.
Attacks on security forces in Egypt have escalated since the ouster of Islamist President Mohamed Morsi in 2013. Most are found in the Sinai Peninsula.
Hundreds of jihadists and Islamists have been sentenced to death in recent years, often in mass trials, a process that has been criticized by the international community.
