At least 25 people were killed and 35 injured when their bus crashed into a truck parked on the side of the road in central Egypt, state-run Akhbar Elyom newspaper reported.
“The driver of the truck had stopped on the side of the road to change a tire when he was hit from behind by the bus” with about 50 passengers, explained the governorate of Minya, where the incident occurred, 300 kilometers south of Cairo. An earlier count, given by the government earlier today, put the death toll at 22 and 33 injured.
The Ministry of Solidarity announced that it will pay compensation of approximately 500 euros to the relatives of each victim.
Traffic accidents are common in Egypt, where the roads are not well maintained and the traffic code is often not followed.
Officially, 7,000 people were killed in road accidents in 2020 in the Arab world’s most populous country, with 103 million inhabitants.
