The process for the release of political activist Rami Saath, who is being held in Egypt, has begun, according to Reuters, citing judicial sources in Cairo.
According to two officials who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity, Saath will be deported to France after his release.
Egypt’s former lawmaker, Anwar al-Sadat, who has been involved in the recent release of some detainees, said earlier today that Saath would be released and then deported.
Rami Saath, an Egyptian-Palestinian rights activist, was arrested in June 2019 and remanded in custody pending trial on charges of aiding a terrorist organization.
In April 2020, his name was added to a list of terror suspects, along with 12 others, a decision that was upheld by the Supreme Court of Egypt in July 2021.
His French wife, Celine Lebrunn Saath, who was deported from Egypt after his arrest, called on the French government to press Cairo for his release.
