Egypt: Emir of Qatar pays first visit to Cairo after years of diplomatic rift

The Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani, arrived in Egypt today for his first official visit in 7 years, a year and a half after the restoration of relations between Cairo and the oil-rich Gulf state, announced the Egyptian presidency.

The emir was received at the airport by President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

Diplomatic relations between the two countries were suspended for three years and resumed in January 2021, as part of a reconciliation between Qatar and four Arab countries.

Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain ended their relations with Qatar in June 2017, which they blamed mainly for its proximity to Iran and support for the Muslim Brotherhood, accusations denied by the Doha.

Born in Egypt in the 1920s, the fraternity spread throughout the Arab world before being banned in Egypt in the wake of the overthrow of Islamist leader Mohamed Morsi by current President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

The last visit of the Emir of Qatar to Egypt was in 2015 during the summit of the Arab League and since January 2021, the two heads of state had been seen twice, always on the sidelines of summits abroad.

The visit to Egypt comes days after the visit of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who also traveled to Jordan and Turkey.

Another sign of the resurgence of relations between the two countries, Qatar announced in late March that it was going to invest 4.5 billion euros in Egypt, while the hydrocarbon giant QatarEnergy signed an agreement with the American ExxonMobil to acquire a “40% stake”. “Exploration work of a plot off the coast of Egypt”, without specifying the amount.
