Egypt: Judge sentenced to death for murdering his wife

Egyptian a court sentenced one to death today judge for the murder of his wife, at a time when the country is shaken by many cases femicide.

According to a judicial img who spoke to AFP, the criminal court in Giza, near Cairo, imposed the maximum sentences on Ayman Haggag and an accomplice for “manslaughter”. The victim was the wife of the former, Saima Gamal, a television presenter.

Under Egyptian law, the mufti of the Republic must now give an opinion on the death penalty, but his opinion is only advisory. The death sentence may be overturned when the final sentence is announced on September 11.

In late June, Ayman Haggag, a judge in Egypt’s Council of State, reported the disappearance of his wife, Shaima Gamal, 42, to authorities. In July, prosecutors prosecuted Hagag and an accomplice who surrendered and confessed to participating in the woman’s murder. He even indicated the spot where she had been buried.

Feminicides have increased in Egypt in recent months. Last week, a student was taken into custody for allegedly murdering a fellow student because she rejected his advances. A similar murder had taken place two months ago. In late July, a court ordered that the execution of the killer of a student be broadcast live by the media.

According to Egyptian authorities, approximately eight million women were victims of violence in 2015, by husbands, relatives or strangers in public.
