The president of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, said this Wednesday (18) that Egyptians, in their millions, would reject the forced displacement of Palestinians to Sinai, adding that any such measure would turn the peninsula into a base for attacks against Israel .
“I would suggest that Israel relocate Palestinian civilians to the Nakab desert in Israel until it ends its operations with Hamas and other Islamic militias,” said President El-Sisi. The Nakab is also called the Negev desert.
The border between the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt and the Gaza Strip It is the site of the only crossing into Palestinian territory that is not controlled by Israel.
Israel’s unprecedented bombing and siege of Gaza to destroy Hamas militants, who control the strip, have raised fears that its 2.3 million inhabitants could be forced south to Sinai.
“What is happening now in Gaza is an attempt to force civilian residents to take refuge and migrate to Egypt, which should not be accepted,” Sisi said.

“Egypt rejects any attempt to resolve the Palestinian issue through military means or through the forced displacement of Palestinians from their lands, which would be done at the expense of countries in the region,” he added.
Sisi said the Egyptian people “will come out and protest in their millions… if called upon to do so” against any relocation of Gazans to Sinai.
Egypt fears insecurity near its border with Gaza in northeastern Sinai, where it has faced an Islamist insurgency that has intensified a decade ago.
