Egypt: Those who give misleading weather reports will be fined up to 150,000 euros

The proposals of the Egyptian agency state that there should be penalties for those who talk about “meteorology or anyone who uses devices to help them predict the weather without our consent or anyone who causes confusion about the weather”.

This week the cabinet of the government of President Abdel Datah Al-Sisi submitted the related bill to the Egyptian parliament.

Egypt has had a law since 2018 that makes it a criminal offense to spread “fake news”, while any account on social media platforms with more than 5,000 followers is then automatically considered a media outlet and can therefore be prosecuted for spreading false information.

If the weather law passes, fines for spreading false information will range from 3,000 to 150,000 euros, according to the Egyptian newspaper “Al-Ahram”..
