Egyptian authorities are working to take 36 newborn babies from Gaza’s Al-Shifa hospital to Egypt, according to the country’s health minister.
The Health Ministry is trying to coordinate the transfer with the Palestinian Red Crescent Society (PRCS), Egyptian Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said on Tuesday.
“We were asked to receive 36 newborns in incubators,” said Abdel Ghaffar, adding that he is working with his team and other caregivers to get them to Egypt “as quickly as possible.”
“I have 36 ambulances equipped with portable respirators waiting at the border to receive these children and take them immediately to our hospitals,” said Abdel Ghaffar.
The Minister of Health stated that the transfer itself would be dangerous and that having mobile incubators ready in ambulances is essential. He said he was informed by PRCS that the organization was trying to place three babies in a single incubator, “because they don’t have that much energy source to sustain them.”
“We have to be ready to catch them immediately,” Abdel Ghaffar told CNN. “Time is important, and every minute we don’t get them, the chances of them dying are very high.”
The minister said the Egyptian Red Crescent was ready at the Rafah border crossing to receive the babies.
