Eight hundred thousand refugees from Ukraine are expected to arrive in Italy

Up to 800,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Ukraine are expected to arrive in the country in the coming weeks, according to the Italian press. So far, according to La Repubblica, there are about 1,000 Ukrainians who have managed to leave the war behind and find protection in Italy.

The government of Mario Draghi has decided that one-year hosting will automatically be granted to anyone who chooses Italy as a safe place to stay. Their right of residence can then be renewed. To be hosted will be used hotels that until now were equipped for citizens who were isolated, due to the fact that they were diagnosed positive in the coronavirus.

In total, in this first phase, 16,000 beds will be available, paying special attention to the needs of the elderly and children. At the same time, there will be indirect support. That is, Italian families who decide to host one or more refugees will be financially supported by the public and local government.

These are largely Italian families already employed by Ukrainians who have been willing to help the refugees in practice. A total of 250,000 Ukrainian citizens live in Italy. This is the highest number of all European countries.

Today, all pediatric hospitals in Italy have announced that they are preparing a special network of cooperation, in order to be able to offer, to all children with chronic diseases and victims of war, the most appropriate medical care. Finally, the goal of the Italian Ministry of Health is to undergo a diagnostic test for Covid-19 refugees who will arrive in Italy from Ukraine.
