Eighth wave of coronavirus in Japan: Cases broke the 200,000 barrier in 24 hours

The cases in Japan broke the 200,000 barrier in 24 hours yesterday (12/21) for the first time since August 25. During the same period, another 296 patients succumbed to complications from COVID-19, as the archipelago has been faced with the so-called eighth wave of the new coronavirus pandemic.

206,943 confirmed outbreaks, up geometrically from last Wednesday’s 16,000. Tokyo recorded 21,186 for the second straight day, with the number rising for the 16th consecutive 24-hour period (up from 2,374 last Wednesday). The number of patients hospitalized in intensive care units (ICU) increased by 37 to 530.

The official tally of victims of the new coronavirus pandemic in the archipelago has reached 54,026 dead in a total of 27.58 million infections, according to data from the Japanese Ministry of Health.
