A large majority of Americans support the cessation of Russian energy imports, reacting to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, despite rising gasoline prices, according to opinion polls (Reuters / Ipsos).
The poll, conducted Monday and Tuesday, shows that Democratic President Joe Biden has broad support from his party and Republican voters for a ban on Russian oil and gas imports to the United States.
Eighty percent of those polled – including cross-party majorities – say Americans should not buy oil and gas from Russia during the conflict, despite a rise in gasoline prices. Overall support remained stable from last week’s poll, despite the fact that the average price of fuel in the US rose yesterday to a record price of $ 4.17 (3.82 euros) per gallon.
Prior to Biden’s announcement yesterday that the Russian energy market in the United States would end, an escalation of Russian bombardment of Ukrainian cities put pressure on the US president to speed up sanctions against Moscow.
About 63% of those polled said the increase in fuel prices was worth the economic price of defending another democracy. About two-thirds of respondents said they would be willing to pay more than another dollar a gallon for gasoline. This view, however, was more common among Democrats than among Republicans.
Seventy-three percent of those polled said they would support a move by the United States and its NATO allies to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine as part of an effort to protect Ukrainians from Russian airstrikes. This view was expressed in the poll, despite the fact that it may bring NATO into direct conflict with the Russian armed forces.
NATO has rejected calls for a no-fly zone over concerns about a nuclear war with Russia. The cross-party majority in the poll said they were opposed to the idea of US air strikes or the deployment of US troops in Ukraine.
Biden’s management of the crisis has seen better results in recent weeks, with a 45% approval rating in the most recent poll, up from 34% in the poll completed on the eve of the Russian invasion of Ukraine (February 24).
A separate poll (Reuters / Ipsos) completed on Tuesday showed that the percentage of Americans who do not approve of Biden’s presidency fell by five percentage points from last week to 49%, down from 50% for the first time since December.
Biden’s approval rating, which has been below 50% since August and remains close to his lowest level in his presidency, rose to 45% from 43% last week.
The two polls were conducted online and in English nationwide, and gathered the views of 1,005 participants with an accuracy of around 4%.
