El Salvador: Over 30,000 gang members arrested in 50 days

His Police El Salvador announced that it has arrested more than 30,000 members gangs within 50 days of the country’s government declaring a “war” on these criminal gangs, which accused of a climate of terror through murder and extortion.

According to Agence France-Presse, the country’s authorities in a post they made on Twitter, noted that “yesterday Sunday, May 15, 536 terrorists were arrested, fifty days after the start of the state of emergency. The total number of arrests since the start of the gang war is 30,506».

The French agency also added that the arrests were made at in the context of the “war” declared by President Najib Boukele in late March, when it occurred massacre with 87 dead.

Thus, at the request of the Head of State, Parliament ordered an emergency regime allowing imprisonment without a court order and toughening sentences for gang members up to 45 years in prison.

This regime extended for 30 days in late April. It also restricts freedom of assembly and defense rights, extends police detention and allows wiretapping.
