El. Spyrtounias (Hellenic-American Chamber of Commerce): New big investment in wind energy is coming

The investment interest of American companies in our country continues at a steady pace.

As the general director of the Hellenic American – Chamber of Commerce, Elias Spyrtounias points out, according to information, a large investment in the field of wind energy in Greece will be announced soon, one of the largest in the region.

In an interview with APE / MPE and journalist Aleko Lidoriki, Mr. Spyrtounias points out that Greece can not only be an energy hub in the energy sector but also a power producer, which creates great investment opportunities.

In this context, the energy sector is under the “microscope” of US investors and new investments will follow, said the director general of the Hellenic-American Chamber, who has completed more than 10 years of successful tenure in this crucial position that gives him opportunity to come in direct contact with dozens of representatives of American chambers around the world, agencies, companies and organizations domestically and internationally forming a primary picture of the current financial situation and the prospects before us.

Mr. Spyrtounias conveys the concerns, skepticism and uncertainty that prevail at international and European level due to the geopolitical crisis from the war in Ukraine and the pre-existing energy, but points out that he maintains optimism for our country. The messages from Tourism are optimistic. The reservations, according to information received from contacting travel agents, are large and may exceed the record number of 2019, while there are no cancellations.

Mr. Spyrtounias points out that the fact that for the first time in a long time there are nine direct air connections of our country with the USA, even with cities like Boston that did not have for a long time, a positive contribution, a fact that shows the important interest for Greece. Considering that the investment interest continues and if at the same time the opportunities created by the Recovery and Resilience Fund are taken advantage of, we can be kept as a country, he states.

He notes that small and medium-sized enterprises need to pay attention in the age of new challenges, as large enterprises generally have more alternatives to deal with problems that arise such as rising money and energy costs.

Mr. Spyrtounias points out that despite the fact that the Greek-American economic relations are at historically high levels, there are possibilities and prospects for further strengthening of the trade balance of the two countries. Emphasizes the importance of the constant strategy of updating the progress given to our country in individual sectors as well as the presentation of new investment opportunities that arise. We should not present Greece as a market of 10 million people but as the focus, the hub for activity in a wider area that has a population of even 80 million people.

Speaking about energy, Mr. Spyrtounias said that Greece can stand on its own two feet by using the alternative energy sources it has, but something that cannot be done overnight. He pointed out that the increase in energy costs is due to a number of geopolitical issues such as Europe’s significant dependence on Russian gas, the policy of rapid carbonization at European level without alternative infrastructure yet, and referred to issues such as consideration of the possibility of reducing the excise tax.
