The Civil Police of Pernambuco is investigating the death of Leonardo Lustosa da Silveira Castro, 68 years old, attacked by a pitbull while trying to pet the animal without a muzzle, in Bairro Novo, Olinda, in Greater Recife. The incident happened on Monday night (16), on Rua João Ribeiro, in front of the victim’s residence.
Security camera footage recorded the moment Leonardo was talking to his neighbor, the pitbull’s owner, and approached to pet the dog.
Within seconds, the animal lunges forward and attacks the elderly man’s neck. The neighbor tries to control the pitbull, while Leonardo gets up covered in blood. The images are graphic, which is why they were not shared in the report.
THE CNN the Civil Police of Pernambuco reported that it opened an investigation to investigate the circumstances of the case.
According to the police, Leonardo was rescued by family members and taken to a private hospital in Olinda, where he received medical attention.
The team reported that the bite hit the internal jugular vein, causing severe bleeding. Leonardo did not survive his injuries and died on Tuesday (17), one day after the attack.
