Elderly woman dies after bus crash in Rio de Janeiro

An elderly woman died after being thrown from a moving bus on the afternoon of last Thursday (3), in the neighborhood of Vila Valqueire, in the west of Rio de Janeiro. A man had died two days earlier in a similar accident in the downtown area.

According to information from the Fire Department, Maria da Glória Silva, 79, fell on Rua Luiz Beltrão, at the time of Praça da Amizade, when she was aboard a bus on line 783, which travels Marechal Hermes. – Dry Square.

The agents were called around 3:15 pm on Thursday, and took the elderly woman, who was in a wheelchair, to the Salgado Filho Municipal Hospital, in Méier, north of the city. The victim, however, did not survive his injuries.

The case was registered at the 28th Police Station, Praça Seca. The Civil Police said they heard the bus driver and witnesses. Agents analyze security camera footage to find out what happened.

On Tuesday morning (1st), passenger Charles da Conceição also died after falling from a bus on the Trunk 7 line, which runs the Central – Cosme Velho route, in the central region of Rio. He was near the door and was thrown out as the vehicle took a sharp turn.

The bus driver said, in a statement given at the 6th Police Station, in Cidade Nova, that the vehicle’s door was defective. Rio Bus informed, in a note, that the vehicle had only two months of use. Police requested footage from the bus’s internal cameras to investigate the circumstances of the accident.

The Municipal Transport Department (SMTR) informed, in a note, that it will apply contractual fines in the amount of R$ 16 million to each of the consortia involved in the accidents, Intersul and Transcarioca.

“The secretariat will also suspend, from the dates of the accidents, the payment of the subsidy to the vehicles involved on the trunk line 7 (Central -Cosme Velho) and line 783 (Marechal Hermes x Praça Seca), until they are inspected and released”, declared.

SMTR informed that it would start on Friday, 4th, a special operation of inspection of buses in all depots to verify the general state of conservation of the fleet.

“The action will start with the vehicles of the companies Transurb, linked to the Troncal 7 line, of Consórcio Intersul, and Auto Viação Três Amigos, responsible for line 783, of the Consórcio Transcarioca”, said SMTR.

“Starting next week, the inspection teams will continue with the inspection work in the garages to check the condition of the buses. In case of irregularities, the responsible consortia will be fined and the vehicles, depending on the state of conservation, can be sealed until they receive the necessary repairs.”
